Writer

In 2010, Kate was scouted by CTV to write for the station's first ever news magazine show, ClearVoice. The program ran for three years. During that time she wrote for former NECN Anchor/Reporter Christine Caswell and Fox 25 Reporter John Monahan. In 2012, ClearVoice received two Telly awards. She is also the news writer for the station's news program, Catholic NewsBreak, which she also serves as substitute news anchor. On top of producing, The Gist, she is also the writer for the show.

But Kate began her career in news in print journalism. She wrote for the Arts & Entertainment section of The Berkeley Beacon, later serving as it's Assistant Editor. She also wrote for JSONS.

John and Christine look back on the great interviews featured on ClearVoice™, including interviews with Ang Lee and Emma Stone & Ryan Reynolds, as well as the members of Celtic Woman.

Tinseltown Sets Up For Oscars

By Kate Andrews — 02/23/11

On Sunday the red carpet will be packed with Hollywood elite wearing designer duds, but jeans and sweatshirts were all the rage today outside the Kodak Theater. Workers prepped for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year while tourists snapped photos of the area.

Traffic was blocked off from Hollywood Boulevard. Clear tents were posted and a plastic cover shielded the red carpet from any bad weather. Journalists from across the globe strolled up and down the area, grabbing footage and taking pictures.

WEBN will be here for the rest of the week to watch as the final setup is unveiled for the 83rd Academy Awards this Sunday. Stay tuned for interviews with Henry Winkler, Wolfgang Puck, and the President of the Academy, Thomas Sherak, as WEBN covers this year’s Oscars.

Cecchetto is Oscars Hostess Extraordinaire

By Kate Andrews — 02/25/2011

Cheryl Cecchetto is the ultimate event planner. She takes hosting the Governors Ball personally.

“Everyone who comes in the door [of the Governors Ball] is a VIP, is a celebrity. I don’t see people as being celebrities. I see them all being guests,” she said.

Her guests are going to be treated to old Hollywood glamour. That’s because Cecchetto’s theme this year is 1940s and 50s nostalgic Hollywood nightspots.

“Our theme is what I think is our interpretation of modern day Mocambo or Copacabana,” she said.

A latin-band members will be wearing fancy ruffled shirts as the play under large metal palm trees.

“I was really inspired to create . . . this huge, massive centerpiece with the Swarovski crystals on the trunk of our Governors Ball Mocambo palm tree . . . I think I’d like them to come in and say ‘Oh wow, I’m in my own place now. I’m at the Governor’s Ball.'”

Next up for Cecchetto is a Bat Mitzvah but she says she never stops thinking about what she will do for next year’s Governors Ball.

AMPAS President Tells It Like It Is

By Kate Andrews and Victoria Bergland— 02/24/11

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak laughed when he gave a Mel Brooks quote about his post, “It’s good to be the King.”

Acting as President in his second year and a member of the board of Governors of the Academy since 2003, he understands what goes into putting on as elaborate a show as the Academy Awards. For 2010, he hired the show’s producer in early November but after that he learned his lesson.

“I realized you need more time than that. So I hired these two producers in June/July of this past year,” he said.

The Oscars Meets a New Generation

By Victoria Bergland and Kate Andrews — 02/24/11

Youth, glamour and talent with a dash of the past . . . that is the theme of this year’s Oscars according to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak.

“We’re going to show the past and how lucky we all are to be in the present,” he said.

Oscar producers are embracing the theme by hiring the youngest ever co-hosts of the Academy Awards. James Franco is 32 years old while Anne Hathaway is 28. It’s a sharp turn from last year. That is when the 65-year old Steve Martin and 44-year-old Alec Baldwin graced the stage.

Even the ten best picture nominations have connected with a younger audience. Sherak is going one step further into the youth culture by adding backstage cameras to the award ceremonies website.
Stay tuned this week for more Oscar coverage from WEBN.
